Gondar, Ethiopia (UoG ): As part of environment awareness and protection initiatives of University of Gondar, a high level delegation team from the President office led by Professor Mengesha Admasu, President, University of Gondar, Faculty of Agricultural, Dean , Director, research scholars recently visited Lake Tana at northern and north-eastern shoreline of the Lake.
The aim of the visit was to study and understand the impact and effect of the noxious weed infestations that has huge impact on the agricultural sector. It is also hampering the productivity in the rural village and potentially posing a threat to the livelihood of the surrounding villages around the lake comprising about fifteen Kebeles in Dembia, Gondar Zurya and Libo Kemkem districts which covered about 30,000 hectares.
The noxious weed is posing a significant threat to livelihoods, biodiversity, tourism and the general ecological health of the Lake Tana ecosystem.
Currently there is no Integrated Weed Management strategy in place and only manual control has been in use with no other selected methods for complement one another. The current manual control approach has operational weaknesses and needs to be up scaled through improving on the technological process for efficiency and safety reasons.
With the commitment towards the environment and ecosystem, the University of Gondar has established task force – SAVE LAKE TANA, that will look into the acceptable, effective, efficient and environmentally friendly short term and long term methods to control the noxious weeds infestation over Lake Tana. The endeavor is to reduce evaporation and loss of water surface, reducing siltation and reduce water pollutants (nitrates, phosphates, etc). The above objective will be met by three pilot projects to be designed for implementation shortly.
For which the University of Gondar task force has put forth three projects to tackle the problem that will be implemented shortly.
- Hyacinth eradication project
- Integrated watershed management project
- Urban waste management project
