Alexander+Roberts has unveiled a 12-day Adventures in Ethiopia itinerary for 2016-17, marking the tour operator’s first foray into the African country.
The expedition will begin in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and will continue on to Lalibela, a Unesco World Heritage site that features a complex of medieval churches carved from rock. The trip will also include six days in southern Ethiopia with visits to Lake Chamo, the Omo River and the Konso Highlands. There will also be stops in towns, villages and markets along the way and opportunities to interact with some of the country’s tribal groups such as the Mursi, Dorze, Dassanech, Karo and Hamer tribes.
Additionally, there will be a September 2016 departure hosted by Scott Davis, a National Geographic Society grantee, wildlife researcher and professional travel photographer. The photography-themed itinerary will be geared toward aspiring and established photographers who would like to benefit from Davis’ insights while traveling through and photographing Ethiopia.
Alexander+Roberts is also offering departures scheduled around three Ethiopian celebrations: the Christmas season, which is celebrated in early January according to the Gregorian calendar, and draws numerous pilgrims to Lalibela; Orthodox Easter in April; and the Festival of a Thousand Stars, a gathering of desert and highland tribes to share ceremonial dances and songs.
The Adventures in Ethiopia journey is priced from $5,699 per person, based on double occupancy, and is limited to 16 guests per departure. Included in the price are sightseeing, accommodations, most meals, airport transfers, and all transportation and internal flights during the tour.
