(The West Australian) — Despite having very limited performance experience, the 18-year-old’s natural ability saw her land a coveted spot on the talent show, which stars coaches Ricky Martin, Delta Goodrem, Jessie J and brothers Joel and Benji Madden.
Both the Madden brothers and Jessie J spun their chairs around when they heard Teshome sing, meaning she had to decide which coach’s team she wanted to join.
But Teshome admitted she had her heart set on the UK pop star from the beginning.
“I had it in my mind as soon as I found out that Jessie was a coach. I knew I was going to go with her definitely,” she explained to AAA .
“She told me I need to work on confidence and that’s something I hope to develop with her. I was definitely a bit starstruck but I’m looking forward to working with her.”
While Teshome has been singing since the age of nine, the Noranda local only began vocal training at the beginning of last year after constant encouragement from her family and friends.
“Everyone’s been telling me since I was young that I’ve got talent and I need to start pursuing a career in music. I thought The Voice would give me an outlet to showcase it to Australia,” she said.
“I’ve never done a gig in my life so it’s all completely new to me. I was a little nervous and I thought that would get the better of me but the coaches did see the talent I had.”
Having auditioned with Beyonce’s song Broken-Hearted Girl, Teshome said the hitmaker was her ultimate inspiration.
“Her voice is amazing, her dancing ability and aura on stage, she gives 100 per cent every time,” she said. “I aspire to be like her as a performer.”
