Coca-Cola has announced that it has partnered with the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) to reignite Copa Cola, a football match for teenagers under 15.
Coca-Cola sponsored this year’s Copa Coca-Cola Tournament for 3.8 million birr for matches to take place in all the nine regional towns and two federal cities for both boys and girls teams.
The tournament has started with matches taking place with regional qualifiers to select the best players to make up a team representing each region. Nine teams each for boys and girls from each region will play in a national round robbin and knockout tournaments to determine the winner starting August 16 in Adama, Oromia Regional State.
At the end of tournament, 22 players each from the boys and girls tournaments will be selected to join the Ethiopian Sports Academy for a chance to get training opportunities and will be groomed to become the next generation of footballers.
“We are pleased that Coca-Cola is bringing back Copa Coca-Cola and for creating this platform on a national level for Ethiopian footballers to show their skill. We are confident that Copa Coca-Cola will be a great opportunity to identify and groom talented Ethiopian footballers,” Juneydin Basha, president of EFF, said.
“As of date, there has not been a significant opportunity such as this where up-and- coming and talented youth footballers get the chance to get professional training opportunities,” said King’ori Macharia, Franchise Manager Ethiopia. “This is a continuation of Coca-Cola Ethiopia’s Billion Reasons To Believe (BRTB) campaign where we affirm our faith in Ethiopian young footballers and give them an avenue to showcase their talents and opportunity to continue, step by step, to becoming the next generation of Ethiopian footballers.”
Qualifiers in Afar, Benishangul, Amhara Regions and Dire Dawa City have been finalized and best players to represent each in both the boys’ and girls’ categories have been selected. Qualifiers in the remaining regional towns and Addis Ababa are ongoing. The national tournament will commence on August 16, 2015 and the final games in both male and female categories will be held on August 30, 2015.
