An arrest has been made in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian near United Medical Center on the Maryland line exactly a month ago, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Monday.

A female pedestrian, since identified as Emebet Kebede of Lanham, was crossing the street in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue SE when a driver fatally struck her. The crash occurred on Aug. 21. at 6:11 p.m.

On Monday morning, MPD arrested 32-year-old Rahveed Shamaah Comford of Ft. Washington. Comford faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, a release states.

Emebet Kebede’s death was the second fatal hit-and-run this year in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue SE. Faith Josephine Pines was struck on April 28 by 26-year-old security guard Chatara Johnson, who fled the scene. Pines died the following day at Washington Hospital Center Medstar. She was 68.

According to court documents, Johnson told police she struck Pines while going between 50 and 55 mph in a 30-mph zone. “The defendant then states that she saw the pedestrian and slammed on [the] brakes, but it was too late,” an affidavit states. “She stated that she struck the pedestrian, panicked, and fled the scene of the collision.” Johnson, according to a proffer of facts, called police three hours later and claimed the car had been stolen. Johnson’s brother-in-law, who owned the vehicle, called police the next day to report that Johnson was the one who struck Pines.

As part of a plea deal, Johnson pleaded guilty in July to one count of negligent homicide and one count of leaving after colliding. Together, the charges carry a maximum penalty of five and a half years in prison and fines of up to $13,500. Johnson will be sentenced on Sept. 30 in D.C. Superior Court.

Emebet Kebede and Faith Josephine Pines are two of at least seven pedestrians killed in D.C. this year.
