A street party is kicking off this Friday to raise money for the town of Nekemte in Ethiopia.

The charity, Estepona-Ethiopia Link, is putting on food and drink donated by local bars, shops and restaurants with flamenco, singers, a raffle, a magician and other musicians.

Last year’s party raised €4,500 and the aim this year is to top that and hit €5,000.

Estepona residents Richard Hayes and Emilie Tieken, running the event, spent two years volunteering in western Ethiopia, Nekemte, and have raised €10,000 for the market town since then.

Friday night’s proceeds will go towards several projects in the same town – the main one being better toilet facilities for females.

Englishman Hayes and his Dutch wife, Tieken, ran an English language academy in Estepona for 30 years.

The event is happening in a main Estepona square Plaza del Reloj, this Friday October 2 from 7-12pm and tickets (€1) can be bought on the door.
