Manuel David Afonso’s brace gave Angola a deserved 2-1 win over hard-fighting Ethiopia in a Group B at the 2016 Chan match played at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Monday.

Angola fought tooth and nail to earn their first and only win of the African Nations Championship (Chan) when they edged Ethiopia. Afonso broke the deadlock in the second half in the 54th minute when he finished from close range to beat Ethiopia second-choice goalkeeper Yidnekachew Beyene from a beautiful square ball from Gelson.

Afonso got his brace in the 75th minute calmly finishing off past a hapless Beyene from a neat pass to give Angola a deserved 2-0 lead.

However their celebrations were short-lived as Ethiopia gathered pace fighting for an equalizer that came two minutes later when skipper Seyoum Tesfaye rifled the ball into the Angola net past goalkeeper Dominique Antonio to pull a goal back for Ethiopia but it was to late to make any comeback as they succumbed to their second loss in the competition despite mounting a fierce comeback that never materialized into the much needed goals.

The game was important especially for Ethiopia who would have sneaked into the quarterfinals by beating Angola and hoping that DR Congo beat Cameroon in the other game played at Huye but it was not to be.

Ethiopia began the game like a house on fire perhaps knowing the urgency of the game in the 19th minute. Ethiopia lost a golden opportunity when a well struck free kick by Behailu went inches wide with Angola goalkeeper Dominique Antonio well beaten.

Angola got their chance in the 28th minute when Natael’s marauding run down the left saw him enter the danger area as he fired a low shot at goal, but the ball was blocked by Ethiopia’s second-choice goalkeeper Kidane’s using his legs.

The remainder of the first half was a seesaw affair by both sides with no goals but plenty of fouls in a stop-start game.

Upon resumption Ethiopia coach Yohannes Sahle immediately effected a tactical substitution bringing on Elias Mamo for the ineffective veteran Behailu Assefa who had a quiet game in the first half while Augusto Quiebeto replaced Pedro Luvumbo for Angola.

Angola held on to their lead to win their first game despite having been knocked out from the competition.

Both teams pack their bags to travel back home as DR Congo and Cameroon qualify for the quarterfinals.
