Mesquite―A clerk at a 7-Eleven in Mesquite is sharing his story after coming to blows with an armed robber who entered his store demanding cash.
It was 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, at the store on Oates Road. Clerk Eyob Million was in an aisle restocking some shelves, not realizing he was seconds away from the fight of his life.
“He told me get up, get up and walk,” said Eyob Million.
The masked man dressed in black came in with a handgun, and grabbed Million, then quickly pushed him toward the front counter. He came for the money in the registers, but he didn’t stop there.
“I opened the register and he got the bag and he told me to put it in there,” said Eyob Million. “He told me to get the cigarettes. Only Newports.”
The thief then demanded Eyob Millions’ phone and wallet, hitting him in the head with his gun as a way to hurry him up. But the clerk soon saw his opening.
“I was trying to give [my wallet] to him and he tried to hit me and I grabbed his arm and I put the gun to his chest,” he said.
Just like that Million had control, but not for long. The gun drops and the pair fight behind the counter for the next agonizing minute, with every punch and kick caught on surveillance. But Million regains the gun, and the thief asks for mercy with his best excuse.
“He’s like, ‘I have asthma’, and I was like ‘Well, I didn’t ask you to come here in the first place, you’re the one who came,'” he said.
At gunpoint, Eyob Million leads the crook out of the store, giving us a view of his face. But it’s the last one we get before he runs off, leaving the scene before police arrive.
Eyob Million says the thief resembles a customer who comes in regularly and buys the same kind of cigarettes that the thief demanded.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.
