Two South Australians are ending a 400-kilometer voyage in sea kayaks, which has raised money to support people with disability.

Peter Morrison and Chris Halstead set out from Port Hughes late last month to paddle around Yorke Peninsula, west of Adelaide, and are ending their sea trek at Port Wakefield today.

“The weather gods have been quite kind to us. It’s been amazing to see parts of Yorke Peninsula that a lot of people perhaps don’t get to see, it’s been fantastic,” Mr Halstead told 891 ABC Adelaide.

He said the cliffs near the foot of the peninsula had been among the highlights.

“It’s rugged cliffs and it’s just some of the biggest swells in the state there,” he said.

“[But] the day was just perfect, the swell dropped off and the wind dropped off and it was just absolutely amazing.”

Mr Morrison said he had spent time in Ethiopia as a humanitarian worker and the fundraiser aimed to help people with disability there create an income so they did not have to beg on the streets.

“For a number of years we have been trying to establish an indigenous organization that runs itself — they need to be able to create an income, they don’t have the support that we’re used to in Australia [for people with disability],” he said.

“Chris and I were planning a [kayaking] trip and decided to make it a fundraiser for Ethiopia.”

So far it has more than doubled its initial target.

Mr Halstead said the pair had camped most nights on secluded beaches but the weather made it tricky at times to reach good landing points.

“My tent pole broke on about the third day and the tent flapping in the wind kept me awake at night,” he said.

He said they had paddled into stiff sea breezes as they headed south down the Spencer Gulf coast of the peninsula, and were enjoying the final part of their journey because the paddle north on the Gulf Saint Vincent coast meant the breeze was from behind.
