As 175 countries signed Paris Climate Accord, the next critical step is global action to enter into force as soon as possible.
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change yesterday at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Developing countries such as Ethiopia are expecting a lot from this agreement as such effective global cooperation on climate change ultimately enable nations moving ahead to take action.
Being the second head of government, Prime Minister Hailemariam put his signature on the Paris Climate Change agreement next to French President François Hollande, according to Awramba Times.
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion said that as 175 countries signed Paris Climate Change deal, the next critical step is global action to enter into force as soon as possible, UN News reported.
“This is by far the largest number of countries ever to sign an international agreement on a single day ” in which Ban described “Today is a historic day,” Since so many world leaders are participating and attending the event, no doubt left that the international community is determined to take climate action, he added.
He also praised the presence of the private sector and civil society, saying they are “crucial to realizing the great promise of the Paris Agreement.”
Adopted in Paris at a conference known as COP21 last December, the agreement’s objective is to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius.
“If all countries that have signed yesterday take the next step at the national level and join the Agreement, the world will have met the requirement needed for the Paris Agreement to enter into force,” Ban highlighted.
