Harare―Ethiopian Airlines is planning further long-haul network expansion this year with new destinations in Asia and North America as it continues with its expansion program.
The company’s out-going country manager Almaz Yigzaw told guests at the Airline’s quarterly travel agents’ awards held in Harare last weekend that the airline was on good stead and would be opening new routes.
The expansion is made possible by the delivery of Ethiopian Airlines’ first batch of 343-seater A350-900s along with additional 270-seater Boeing 787-8s.
The airline is also looking at Chicago and Houston routes, which could be launched in 2017.
In Asia, the airline is planning to launch services to Chengdu, Ho Chi Minh, Jakarta and Singapore. East Asia has been the main driver of the airline’s rapid expansion in recent years — with two destinations added in 2015, to a total of nine — and will continue to be a focus as Africa’s largest airline doubles its fleet over the next decade.
“You, all travel agencies in Zimbabwe, are part and parcel of the growth in this particular area…you are doing your level best to make our growth meaningful,” said Almaz Yigzaw, regarding the airline’s business and the contribution of local travel agencies.
Ethiopian Airlines would be celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, at a time the airline has introduced a modern fleet, including state-of-the-art aircraft, to meet the demands of a growing but discernible clientele.
Multiple-award winning travel agent Traverze Travel came out tops to beat competition from a list of rivals.
Traverze Travel received the Best Travel Agency Award ahead of Wild Africa Travel, Hungwe Travel, Premier Travel and Star Travel, who came out second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Ethiopian Airlines awards are held quarterly to honor outstanding local travel agents.
