New location will be Balagger’s second in the Washington, D.C., region

A traditional Ethiopian restaurant will fill at least a portion of the space previously occupied by longtime neighborhood restaurant Jackie’s and its Sidebar cocktail lounge on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
Balagger Restaurant & Bar, which has a Falls Church, Virginia, location, plans to open its second restaurant in the Silver Spring space, according to Yona, an employee at the Falls Church location who declined to provide his last name.
Yona said Thursday construction is already underway at the building and the restaurant plans to open in a month or so. He said the Falls Church Balagger opened two years ago and the Silver Spring restaurant is part of an expansion plan.
Twitter user Paul Meyer posted a picture of a “coming soon” sign announcing Balagger on the Sidebar portion of the restaurant Sunday. Yona, however, would not say if Balagger is taking over only the Sidebar portion of the restaurant or if it will take over the full restaurant space. The space formerly housing Jackie’s and the Sidebar space are split by a wall, but they are connected by a pathway and share a kitchen.
Yona said he would provide more details about the restaurant in about three weeks. The Falls Church Balagger offers Ethiopian staples such as spicy vegetable and meat stews served on the flatbread injera.
Jackie’s Restaurant and Sidebar closed at the end of March after a 12-year run in Silver Spring, MD at 8081 Georgia Ave.
