A housemaid is facing trial in the Court of First Instance for allegedly absconding after stealing her sponsor’s and her passports and other personal documents.
The Ethiopian maid, 25, was caught after she allegedly approached a woman for a job in Abu Dhabi.
The case dates back to March 13 and was reported to Al Qusais police station.
“A woman called me from Abu Dhabi to tell me that an Ethiopian maid was offering her services to her. I knew that she stole my passport because I had my number written on a sticker on the passport,” said the maid’s 50-year-old Emirati sponsor.
The employer said that he got a call from his wife around noon on the day of the incident, informing him that the maid had absconded.
“My wife told me that the maid’s bedroom was locked and some stuff were missing from the house,” he added.
The employer’s son, a 24-year-old student, said that the maid stole her passport, her medical test paper, the recruitment office documents, her visa and ID papers, a mobile phone and Dh500 (~USD136) in cash. “I was keeping the papers in an envelope in a drawer inside my room,” the son told the prosecutor.
A verdict is expected on May 16, 2016.
