Mangaluru―Mekelle University’s College of Health Sciences has signed an MoU with the Manipal University to engage in research, fellowship program and to set up a forensic lab as a nodal referral center in Ethiopia.

This is the second MoU for Manipal University with a foreign university by the department of forensic medicine, KMC, Mangaluru, after Lyon University, France.

Dr B Suresh Kumar Shetty, state medico-legal consultant and professor and head, forensic medicine, Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru, said the MoU will help in initiating an exchange fellowship and training program for residents in forensic medicine, with practical knowledge about the intricacies of forensic pathology and exchange of academic personnel.

Apart from cooperative development activities and design of courses, conferences, symposiums or academic programs, the memorandum also facilitates exchange of academic or scientific material and publication of common interests. It also moots setting up a forensic toxicology laboratory in College of Health Sciences, Ayder Referral Hospital, in Ethiopia.

Dr Shetty said the MoU envisages in building and maintaining an updated knowledge data base in the field of forensics – both in India and Ethiopia. “Such international collaboration makes the center more visible and vibrant. The MoU will support Ethiopia in building a premier centre in the field of forensics and also to update with the recent advances in areas of criminalistics and forensic pathology practiced across the globe,” he added.

Prof Kibrome Desta, director and dean; Prof Yazezaw, former director and medicine head; and Prof Hareesh, forensic head, Mekelle University; said the MoU will contribute to upgrading the training content on pathology, toxicology and structured approach towards in the field of forensic and devise strategies to strengthen the overall environment to combat crime cases in Ethiopia.

Dr H Vinod Bhat, vice-chancellor, MU, said synergy of the two institutions will help in evolving a learning process that will mutually be beneficial to both institutions.

The MoU signing was attended by Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor; Dr V Surendra Shetty, pro-vice chancellor, Mangaluru Campus; Dr M Venkataraya Prabhu, dean, KMC, Mangaluru; Dr Ramjee B, director international collaborations, Manipal University.
