AAU is to engage, more than before, in research, community service and technology transfer activities thereby contributing its share to national development, according to the Premier.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said that the Addis Ababa University (AAU) is expected to beef up efforts more than before in research, community service and technology transfer activities thereby contributing its share to national development. The University yesterday graduated 8,860 students with fist, second and third degrees.

At the graduation ceremony held at the Millennium Hall, the Premier said that Ethiopia is working hard to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in the country producing human power for various sectors.

The government has been exerting effort to raise access to education in the country. The higher learning education has reached all parts of the nation with the opening of 36 public and 98 private universities, Hailemariam indicated.

AAU President Dr. Admasu Tsegaye said this is the 65th commencement. The University is working to meet the demand of the new generation universities in producing instructors. The university with its 22 institutes has managed to run 70 undergraduate and 245 postgraduate programs enrolling over 52,000 students.

“Today, over 8,500 students graduated in undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level. Over 26 per cent of the graduates are female,” he added.

According to Dr. Admasu, journals published by fellow university scholars has increased both in quality and number. Now a member of African Universities Research Alliance, the AAU is actively working to be one of the reputable universities on the continent. Dr. Admasu further indicated that the University has won the South and East African nations universities competition for the center of Excellence in Science and Technology in four areas organized by the World Bank.

He also announced that the European Union International Business School and Business Incubation Center will be opened next year with the support of the government. At the same, the university is working to increase the number international students by twofold.

Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, families of the graduates and the university community as well as other invited guests attended the ceremony.
