Hawassa Industrial Park to Be Inaugurated

The Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) said that Hawassa Industrial Park constructed at a cost of 250 million USD which has the largest specialized apparel and textile park on the continent will be inaugurated today, July 13, 2016.
IPDC Board Chairperson Dr. Arkebe Oqubay told journalists yesterday that the park is a pioneer park and could be a model for other industrial parks which Ethiopia aspires to build in the future.
Dr. Arkebe, who is also Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, said the park could create 60,000 jobs in two shifts and expected to generate one billion USD for the county annually.
According to him, the earning from the textile sector at present is not more than 110 million USD a year. Currently, with the largest global apparel companies like PVH and NHM, 15 foreign and five local manufactures have entered into the park. Internationally known companies from US, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Hong Kong are represented in the park.
As a model park, the factories in the park have a convenient environment with access to all necessary infrastructure including power, telecom, water. It was noted that one-stop shop services would be established in the park to facilitate the provision of multiple government services to tenants.
The park, which lies on 1.3 million square meters of land, was developed to be and will be an eco-park, is consistent with the nation’s commitment to green economy. The park will have a water and treatment plant which use the latest technology for treating and recycling 80 per cent of the water.
Besides, attracting foreign companies the government has attached significant importance to domestic industrialist in to the park. According to the national industrial park strategy, 25 – 30 per cent of the factories shed and space in the park would be secured for domestic investors.
It was noted that the government would provide incentive package including investment loan, support for capacity building and market linkage.
The construction of industrial parks are underway in Kombolcha, Makalle, Dire Dawa Adama and other towns for priority manufacturing sector such as leather products, agro-processing and construction materials, among others.■ (Ethiopian Herald)
Construction of Adama Industrial Park to Kick Off
The Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) of Ethiopia and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) have yesterday concluded an agreement that enables the latter to build the first phase of Adama industrial park at a cost o of 125 million US dollars.
Sisay Gemechu, CEO of Industrial Parks Development Corporation said the Chinese firm will commence the construction of the park as of next week. It will be concluded and handed over to investors in nine months time.
General Manager of CCECC, Allen Lee, noted that the park will be finalized as per scheduled by drawing valuable lessons from Hawassa industrial park. The Hawassa industrial park is being built by CCECC.
Lee also appreciated Ethiopia’s firm stance towards the development of industrial parks.
According to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Adama industrial park will be erected on 100 hectares of land.
Ethiopian based firm, MH Engineering Plc, will take part as a consultant in the construction of the industrial park.■ (FBC)
