JICA has been working with EMA for the past three years to build the capacity of EMA personnel in digital topographic mapping.

Addis Ababa (ENA)―Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said it has been working to enhance the capacity of Ethiopian Mapping Agency (EMA) in digital topographic mapping.

This was disclosed at the conclusion of a JICA supported capacity building seminar on digital topographic mapping held here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Representative of JICA in Ethiopia, Kimiaki Jin expressed his happiness to witness the dynamic economic growth and social development in Ethiopia, adding that such economic growth needs scientific, national and data-based approach.

He particularly pointed out the need of data for designing construction activities and even for the operation and utilization of different facilities.

Jin added that “topographic map is the very best information we have to create to promote the economic growth in such a scientific manner”.

In this regard, the chief representative stressed the need for scaling up the capacity of Ethiopian Mapping Agency so as to use it in meeting the fast growing social needs.

Ethiopian Mapping Agency (EMA) Director-General, Sultan Mohammed said on his part maximum effort is exerted to enhance the capacity of the agency in order to fulfill its mission of availing timely, accurate, reliable and authoritative geospatial information and satisfy users.

According to him, the goal of the three-year capacity development project was to build the capacity of EMA in order to support and promote the sustainable economic and social development of the country.

“The equipment and training provided have greatly enhanced our capacity in Geodetic and Photo control survey and in Digital Topographic Base Maps production and dissemination,” the director-general stated.

JICA has been working with EMA for the past three years to build the capacity of EMA personnel in digital topographic mapping.

Sultan disclosed that the last phase of the project that covers additional two years will start early in 2017 and the technology transfer will be reinforced through supplemental training and supervision.
