Jimma University (JU) held a very colorful graduation ceremony on June 25 in the presence of members of the university senate, other invited guests and families of the graduates at the Mini Stadium of the main campus.
A total of 2443 students have completed their study and graduated at the ceremony of which 511 are at post-graduate level while 1932 were graduated at BA level. Of all the graduates 847 are females. It was also reported that the University has graduated a total of 1992 students at BA and Masters level in October 2016 which will take the total number of graduates to 4435 without including the sum of the third round graduating students to be held on 2nd July 2016.
Vice president for academics at JU, Dr. Taye Tolemariam presented a condensed annual report of JU in which he highlighted the university’s effort to increase students admission capacity as per its new five years strategic plan (2016- 2020). As part of meeting the plan JU boosted its students admission capacity and is now training 38,862 students’ in 62 undergraduate, 101 Maters and 15 PhD programs. In addition, he emphasized that the ceremony is very special for JU as it features the first PhD graduates in the University’s history. He further underlined that in addition to curriculum based trainings, JU has also been organizing short term capacity building courses as per the demands of newly opened universities and government institutions at federal and regional level in order to contribute its share in resolving the dearth of skilled man power in different fields. Scholars at JU are also undertaking problem based and community oriented researches and has organized several workshops to disseminate research findings in addition to publishing of research outcomes in various national and international journals.
Speaking on the occasion and the guest of honor of the event, Professor Fikre Lemessa, President of JU, underlined that education is the key to achieve the aspiration for development in Ethiopia, as can be learned from the economically advanced countries of the world. In line with that the government has given due attention to expand education and huge investment has taken place in the sector at all levels, among which higher education is the major one. The number of universities has also increased in an historically unprecedented rate and successes have been registered in producing qualified and competent man power for the expanding economy as an outcome of spirally growing private sector investment. Jimma University has been instrumental and the leading university in Ethiopia by providing high quality education and producing qualified graduates that can be agents of change for the quickly advancing economy of their country.
The president has also reminded the graduates that their graduation is only the beginning and an opening of a new chapter in the long march towards building their career. He strongly advised them to keep their eyes open to observe new changes in their surrounding and at the global level because they are living in the dynamic world of technology where they have to apply their knowledge to create new technology and vice versa.
He added that the graduates are now entering in to a new era of their life where they have to shoulder new and challenging responsibilities. That is where they need to apply their knowledge in an honest and ethical manner to the good of their society and reap experience in the meantime. He also advised them to stand against corruption, be hardworking and a person of integrity with strong commitment. These are all the qualities of a good citizen and the kind of professionals the country is demanding at this high time of fighting against poverty.
At the subsequent stages the Head of the Registrar Dr. Getachew Seyoum and Deans presented the graduates in their respective colleges and outstanding students from each program have also received awards from the guest of honor, Professor Fikre Lemessa.
Finally the commencement was wrapped up with a visit to an exhibition, which highlighted some of the major activities and achievements of most units in the University.
