ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (Xinhua)―The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has downplayed the resolution issued by the European Parliament on Ethiopia that criticized the east African country over human right concerns.

The European Parliament on Thursday issued a resolution condemning Ethiopia for not respecting its own Constitution and human rights, notably on the case of the arrested opposition figure Merera Gudina, PhD.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “the resolution lacks some understanding of the situation in the country on topics such as the state of emergency, human rights and the arrest of Merera Gudina.”

“As a leader of a political party, Merera Gudina is particularly supposed to respect and protect the laws and to know that anyone who breaches the law will be held accountable, and the European Parliament should also acknowledge this,” local news media FBC quoted the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying.

The state of emergency prohibits meeting with individuals or organizations proscribed by the Ethiopian Parliament as terrorists.

“While the resolution of the European Parliament is calling an international investigation into the protests, it has to be noted that Ethiopia is endowed with its own investigation mechanisms,” the Ministry indicated.

According to a recent report by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, 669 people were killed in connection with the violent demonstrations, majority of them were civilians.

While the Commission said that in most cases, measures taken by security officers were legal and proportionate, it also indicated that security officers used unnecessary force in some occasions.

The Ethiopian government has released close to 20,000 individuals who were detained in connection with the violent demonstrations, representing 90 percent of the total arrested.
