Police said that frustration due to the delayed performance of the ongoing project as well as the mounting cost of the project might have lead the GERD Project manager take his own life.
ADDIS ABABA (EthiopiaOnline)Ethiopian Federal Police said Engineer Simegnew Bekele, Project Manager of the Renaissance Dam, ‘took his own life’ on July 26, 2018.
Briefing journalists on Friday (September 7, 2018), Commissioner Zeynu Jemal of the Federal Police said that police has completed preliminary investigation on the death of Engineer Simegnew and confirmed that evidences indicate the engineer has made suicide.
“His death was a suicide, with what is known as contact shoot” said the Commissioner General. The Commissioner also underlined that there is no evidence showing the involvement of other individuals in his death. Adding on his statement, he said that the reason for the suicide can be related to frustration caused by the delayed performance of the ongoing GERD project as well as the mounting cost of the project.
Forensic results proved that the handgun found in his car belonged to himself and his car engine was running at the time of his death. The car was on automatic lock when police arrived at the scene, he said.
Engineer Simegnew also made phone calls to various workers at his office before his death, according to the Commissioner.
He said the investigation on the death of the GERD Project Manager was conducted in collaboration with Ethio-telecom, Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and Moenco Ethiopia, an automotive company who has been importing such V8 cars as the one in which Engineer Simegnew found dead.
