OPDO has changed its name to the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP) at the organizational conference held in the town of Jimma, Oromia Regional State.

ADDIS ABABA (EthiopiaOnline)―The Oromo People Democratic Organization (OPDO) has rebranded itself, changing its name and logo.

OPDO has changed its name to the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP) at the organizational conference held in the town of Jimma, Oromia Regional State.

Abiy Ahmed, PhD, who is the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the Chairperson of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), has been elected as the Chairperson of ODP whereas Lemma Megersa, who has been serving as the Chairperson of the party since October 2016, has been elected as Deputy Chairperson.

In his speech at the opening of the conference, the newly elected Chairperson Dr. Abiy Ahmed has said that the party will come up with a new philosophy to serve the region as well as the country.

The rebranding is part of the organization’s efforts to come up with a new philosophy that would enable it to properly lead the reform.

The 9th conference attended by over 6000 members of the party has also retired 14 long-serving officials.

Including the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson, the Oromo Democratic Party has also elected the following ODP/ EPRDF Executive Committee members.

On the other hand, prominent members of the party who are let retire from the party are: Abadula Gemeda, Getachew Bedane, Kuma Demeksa, Girma Biru, Diriba Kuma, Eshetu Desie, Teferi Tiyaru, Shiferaw Jarso, Degfe Bula, Suleiman Dedefo, Abera Hailu, Itefa Tola, Dagnachew Shiferaw and Gifti Abasia.

ODP holds 180 seats, out of 547, in the House of Peoples’ Representatives. In the 2008 by-elections, the then OPDO won 23 seats in the Oromia Regional legislature, and 613 seats from 108 kebeles (~districts) for elections to the kebeles Peoples’ Representatives Council.
